From the President...

2011 is a go!

2011 is off to a great start!

So far we are 100% for our public star parties. Our first star party was the public star party at Rancho San Rafael on 7 January. It was an extremely cold evening, but we still had a small turnout.

On 21 January we had our public star party at Sparks Marina. It was a little bit warmer, and we had a few more people show up.

The nice thing about these two star parties is that our "word of mouth" reputation is spreading. As the public comes out and sees that we are there, they will spread the news to friends and family.

One of our primary missions in the ASN is to share astronomy with the public. Most people that I have had at my telescope at star parties can't believe that they can see Jupiter or Saturn through the scope. Many of them have small telescopes, but don't know how to use them correctly. By attending these events, our community is learning that they can see these things. By sharing our knowledge and experience, we are opening the minds of our community to the world of astronomy. One of the most satisfying things to me from star parties is when people sincerely thank me for showing them something. We are reaching people in a good way!

We have a great group of people in the ASN, and we are doing good things. Thank you everyone for the time and equipment that you volunteer. I am proud to work with such a sincerely great group of people!
