Can I participate in ASN activities even if I don't join?
Astronomy is exciting. Astronomy is contagious. Astronomy is right at your fingertips.
Imagine sharing a cool, moonless night under a canopy of stars and pinpointing treasures lying millions of light years away. Imagine discovering that the second star in the handle of the Big Dipper is really two stars, or a "double star". Or that, in the 18th
Imagine joining in on gatherings with friends and family and new acquaintances. Or, picture a group of school children at a school star party, buzzing with excitement, awaiting their first view of Jupiter and its moons and the great Orion Nebula, through a telescope. These and many other discoveries are here for you when you join our group, the ASN [Astronomical Society of Nevada].
The ASN's goal is to actively further everyone's exposure to the wonders above. We welcome all who are interested, whether you're a seasoned sky explorer or a novice with your first telescope. We also welcome those without telescopes, as we have several available for loan.
The ASN has a wide variety of activities for our membership, no matter what level of interest you may have. Some of these include: public, private and school star parties; presentations and speakers; an annual Messier Marathon; weekend getaway star parties and overnight observing trips; an annual Astronomy Day celebration; field trips to various scientific organizations and observatories; special projects; and workshops covering everything from basic telescope use and construction to astrophotography. We also have a terrific publications discount program for Sky & Telescope Magazine and Astronomy Magazine; a Fleischmann Planetarium discount program; as well as a complete astronomical library program and a loaner telescope program.
Can I participate in ASN activities even if I don't join?
Absolutely! Most ASN events are open to the public and we would love for you to come to one of these events. You can also join our Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/AstronomicalSocietyNV/. Of course, if you do join you will be able to actively participate on this website (post articles, ask questions in the forums, send private messages to other members, etc.). You will also be added to our email list so that we can keep you up do date with the latest ASN activities. Membership dues also help us support us with our public outreach efforts.
There are several ways that you can join the ASN: online, via mail and in person.
The easiest way to join is to register online. To do so, simply click the 'Register' link below the ASN Member Log In form on the upper left side of this page. See the image below. This will take you to a page where you can select a membership level ($20 for Single/Family or $10 for Student) and provide your point of contact information. After submitting your information, you will have several options to make your payment:

- Click the PayPal "Pay Now" button. You will be redirected to a secure Paypal site where your transaction will be processed. You do not need to have a PayPal account to use this feature (major credit cards accepted).
- Click the PayPal "Subscribe" button. You no longer need to remember to submit your ASN dues every year! You will be redirected to a secure Paypal site where you can configure automatic yearly membership payments. You will be prompted to create a PayPal account if you do not already have one. Not available for student memberships.
- Click the "Pay By Mail" button. You will be prompted to print out an invoice and mail your check to the address provided.
After you make your online payment and respond to the email that will be sent to you, your ASN account will be active immediately!
Not everyone is comfortable making an online payment. If you fall into this category, please consider following the steps above and then using the third "Pay By Mail" option. You will still enter your registration information online, but your account will not be active until we receive your payment. Not only does this give you peace of mind that your data will be entered correctly, but it eases some of the workload on our end as well!
Of course, we also have the old standby of a paper membership form. If you wish to have online access to the ASN website and to receive notices of the latest ASN events, you must provide an email address! (Note: some users have had problems opening the membership form using FireFox; if you experience this problem please try again using a different browser).
You can also print out a membership form (or fill out your registration information online in advance) and then come to an ASN meeting! Please see the list of upcoming events on the left side of this page or view the ASN's calendar of events by clicking the 'Calendar' option in the menu above.
In order to renew your membership, log onto the website using your username and password (if you forget your username of password they can be emailed to you by clicking the 'Forgot Login?' link). Then go to your profile by selecting the 'My Profile' option under the Members menu (see image below). Then click the 'Membership Info' tab to view your renewal options (see image below). The same payment options are available that were described above.
