I watched the Geminids for a little while last night/early morning (13th/14th). I counted 12 meteors in 20 minutes, even in not well dark Reno skies with mostly cloudy conditions. Considering such conditions, no doubt only the brighter ones were visible. So I'd say the usual expected rate of 100 per hour would definitely have been seen in clear rural skies, if not plenty more. The Geminids are the heavyweight shower of the year alright! Too bad they aren't in the summer when there'd be a decent chance of getting clear skies on the night of the peak.

Hi Greg,

I was out at Hawthorne last Sunday night, the 12th, and there were alot of meteorites! Searching for DSOs and such, I didnt realize the Geminids were on, however. Should've brought the lawn chair.

clear skies,

Paul

Yeah, you had a good view of the shower out there, just one night before the peak!
